There is a lot going on...
So here is a mid-month update. I hope this helps you not to miss out on registering for workshops, job applications or putting in a proposal for an exhibition.
Good luck to you all.

Do you know that SDA Alberta has a page on the SDA website too.
Go to the grey menu bar on the SDA home page, put your mouse over "Get Involved" and scroll down the pop up menu to "Meet your area rep" and click it. Scroll down the page that opens till you see "Canada" and Alberta and click on Alberta or adjacent provinces/States to see what is going on in our region.
The folks who are working on the website are making progress, still things to do - and as a newbie and can see some areas of concern, but it is a great resource, so I hope you enjoy surfing it.

Oh, and don't forget the upcoming joint SDA/SAQA conference, Identity , in Philadelphia. I will be sending out updated information directly to SDA Members by email.

Any errors or omissions on this blog are unintentional, please help me get it right... and email me any corrections - I won't take offence, and I will post the corrections.
I try to do a lot well, sometimes I fall short. But it is only by making mistakes that we improve. This is a mantra I like to live by.

DaDe ART & DESIGN LAB creates and provides innovative and unique products that enhance interior living spaces. With a distinctive product mix and presentation philosophy DaDe offers a complete product range for modern living, including original art & sculpture by local artists, and exclusive furniture from around the world.

DaDe ART & DESIGN LAB in collaboration with the Alberta Craft Council will showcase contemporary fibre artists. FABRICated will run April 20 to June 3, 2012, showcase unconventional, contemporary works (portraits, QR codes, abstract shapes & forms, ʻNOT your grandmothers quiltʼ), both 2D & 3D, using traditional techniques (quilting, needlework, felting, weaving etc). Works submitted must be show ready.

This is a workshop designed for intermediate-to-advanced weavers (and adventure-seeking beginners) that want to learn new weave structures. In this round-robin workshop, participants will expand their knowledge and experience in weave structures they may have heard of but, may not have woven. A surefire weaving adventure and challenging journey of warp and weft. Structures covered include multi-block swivel and bead leno, corduroy, velvet, samitum, corkscrew twills, lampas, and Beiderwand

This workshop is only offered as a three-day workshop because of the advanced nature of the weave structures covered and the amount of time required to review and weave them.

Surface Design Association is in Selvedge Magazine

The current issue of Selvedge Magazine has a bit of Canadian focus: Trade Routes to Trading Post: Beyond the Blanket - Textiles in Canada, by Joe Lewis, contains a potted history of some Canadian textile facts. We are happy to say that we received mention as one of the highlights.

The same issue contains a wonderful article by Ptolemy Mann on Jacquard weaving and what it means to revert to manual when your "dobby" (a computerized loom) fails. Carol Outram contributes a story on traditional clothing of the Arctic with remarkable photography by Karim Rholem. We've just added issue # 44 to the online store so you can pick it up here.

WHAT'S A GIRL TO DO?
Felted hats by Virginia Stephen that explore life's issues.
February 18 - March 24
Opening reception: Saturday, February 18, 2-4 pm

Edmonton fibre artist, Virginia Stephen, explores a variety of life issues she faces through hand felted hats in her exhibition What's a Girl to Do. The inspiration for Virginia's exhibition began with a felted hat, "What's a Girl to Do?? - less is less" created for the 2011 Alberta Craft Council In the Red group exhibition. Virginia's felted hats are designed not to be worn on the head but to explore many of those life issues that affect the headspace of this artist. Individual themes include issues of balance, work stress, keeping the magic, dealing with weather, keeping up appearances, and the relationships between 'less' and 'more'. Underlying the work is the notion that it is 'ok' to laugh at ourselves and our circumstances, and it is also 'ok' to laugh in a gallery, with or at the art.

Virginia Stephen holds an MA in Visual and Performing Arts Education and undergraduate degrees in both art history and arts education. Currently Executive Director of Liberal Studies, Faculty of Extension at the University of Alberta, Virginia brings to her practice over 25 years of experience as a painter, arts and museum educator, senior arts administrator and consultant.

Dare to Wear Love is the first exhibition devoted to the celebrated work of top Canadian fashion designers who have created original pieces to raise awareness and funds for grassroots organizations who are turning the tide of HIV/AIDS in sub-Saharan Africa. Speaking to the potency and poignancy of artistic expression within a global context, this installation showcases designs created from African cloth by Canada's top fashion designers including Brian Bailey, David Dixon, Fashion Crimes and Linda Lundström as part of Dare to Wear Love, an innovative creative platform initiated by Jim Searle and Chris Tyrell, founders of Hoax Couture.Launched in 2009, Dare to Wear Love challenged 24 designers to create unique couture using 6 yards of African cloth, designs that were then showcased on the runways of Toronto Fashion Week. Portland, ME.- The Art Gallery on the Portland Campus of the University of New England in Portland, Maine presents "Critters", a mammoth show that fills all three floors of the gallery, the foyer and the grounds. It includes about 300 works by almost 100 artists. “Critters” represents three groups of work – wildlife, farm animals, and pets – in situations that may be heartwarming, entertaining, or even poignant for the viewer. The exhibition is on view through 20 July.

Reinventing Ritual features nearly sixty innovative works, created between 1999 and 2009 by leading artists in diverse media. Visitors will see outstanding examples of industrial design, architecture, installation art, video, drawing, metalwork, jewelry, ceramics, comics, sculpture, and textiles, revealing the intersections of creative freedom and Jewish life. A mix of emerging artists and accomplished leaders in the field, most of whom are American and Israeli, with a smaller number of Europeans and South Americans, are represented.

CHAIN OF LIFE: DOCUMENTARY SCREENING AND DIRECTOR’S TALK

The Japanese movie Chain of Life (Meguru) will be shown for one night only at 7:30 pm on Tuesday, February 7 at the Chan Centre’s Royal Bank Theatre (6265 Crescent Road, Vancouver). See attached poster.

Chain of Life examines an artisan’s effort to renew the craft of kimono design using a cherry woodblock printing technique called mokuhanzome..

Visit Whyte Museum, Jan 2012

A crowd of textile artists descended on Banff last week and was treated to an informative talk by Barbara West on her work (shown in a previous post), and that of others from the Bow Valley Fibrearts group, exhibited at the Whyte gallery. We then toured the rest of the exhibits on our own and I present below one or two examples of what we saw.

A large section of the main space was given over to the work of Mary Garnham Andrews Master Weaver. Most enjoyable to me were the collection of Xmas cards displayed in large cases as shown below. These demonstrated her design ability and sense of fun which complemented well the bolts and large swatches that filled the remainder of the gallery. Stunning.

The work of the Articulation group was inspired by items in the Whyte Gallery's collection.
Only a small number of the pieces on show are illustrated below.

Preserved impression 4 is the work of Donna Clement, who chose as her subject, The world famous Burgess Shale Formation.

Ingrid Lincoln produced Illusion a delicate fabric of machine made lace based on the wedding dress of Georgina Luxton.

This stunning piece by Vicky Newinton was inspired by a beautifully glass-beaded jacket in the collection.

Preservation by Wendy Klottz, machine embroidery and appliqué.

This from the show catalogue, and I quote "Wendy Klotz is exploring different presentation mechanisms to place physical separation between some of the layers. Inspiration for her work comes from the natural beauty of Canada together with ecological and social issues that speak to her heart." This is clearly evident in her work:-

Lesley Turner's installation Valuing Women's Work was inspired by a tea service in the Catherine Whyte House.

Gloria S Daly was inspired by the book Rocky Mountain Madness: E.Cavell, J.Whyte

The 17th International Surface Design Association conference will be held June 6–9, 2013, in San Antonio, Texas, USA. The Southwest School of Art will host events preceding and during the conference. A Workshop with Dana Roman

Dana Roman, a local textile artist from Canmore is offering a 3-day workshop,

Classic Silk Painting with a Touch of the Experimental

Here is some information about the workshop from Dana:-

"Classic silk painting" involves colour mixing, different resists, painting on dry and wet silk, texturing with the salt, blocking the spread of colour with the water, over painting with alcohol, etc...

"Touch of experimenting" (I believe that is something individuals will be able to do at home with the knowledge of the classic technique), but we will talk about and try the wax resist, working with the tjanting, working with stencils, finishing the wall pieces, overpainting with acrylics...

First two days we will be doing small samples and scarves, the third day we will work on the individual pieces. Depending on how many people I get, there might be possibility of signing up just for the first two days... it is always good to ask. One picture of large wallhanging is attached, painted by "classic gutta resist method".

When: February 17, 18, 19, 10am to 4pm with 1 hour break for lunch (if needed).

Where: In Dana's studio at 208 Benchlands Terrace, Canmore, AB, T1W1G1

Who: Silk painting for beginners and intermediate students. Maximum 6 students

Cost: 3-day workshop - $450.00 Most of the supplies will be provided

Just an Idea - Banff on Wednesday 11th January

If you can make it to Banff this Wednesday 11th January, I am suggesting an outing so that a group of textile folks descend on the Whyte Gallery in the morning to look at the textile exhibition there. Talk to your friends and arrange a car pool but I hope to see you there around 11/11:30 am providing the weather is good.
If you have work on show there feel free to show some of us around, if you are comfortable with that.

Artist in Residence (AiR) Program
Calgary 2012 is requesting Expressions of Interest (EOI) from: professional artists of all disciplines,
historians and residency hosts interested in participating in the AiR Program during Calgary’s year as Cultural Capital of Canada.
The Artist in Residency (AiR) Program is designed to explore the Calgary 2012 themes of Looking Back, Calgary Now and Looking Forward and connect artists and historians with other aspects of Calgary’s diverse identity such as: commerce, sports, agriculture, science, technology and other urban and suburban experiences. Wherever possible, residencies will take place in unexpected, everyday spaces to engage and delight the public. Residency locations may include: community gathering spaces, places that are part of City-wide celebrations, sporting events and public transportation.
The AiR Program matches artists and historians with residency hosts to establish residencies, for up to 3 months, that fall between April 1, 2012 and February 28, 2013. Highlights of this program will be presented as part of the Calgary 2012 Closing Symposium in early 2013.

Forty artworks by SDA members will be on display at BallardWorks. This exhibit is open to all SDA members living in the Northwest on a first come basis. The Call for Entries will be posted on January 7, 2012.

Surface Matters Studio Tour - Sunday, March 4

Self-guided tours of SDA member artists' studios and retail sponsors will originate at BallardWorks, the venue of the SDA member show.

Announcing SDA and SAQA joint conference “Identity: Context and ReflectionFriday,

Announcing New Surface Design Journal Editor

Marci Rae McDade replaces Patricia Malarcher

as Surface Design Journal Editor

After more than eighteen years of curating articles and images that stimulate the imagination and enrich the intellect as editor of the Surface Design Journal, Patricia Malarcher has decided to step down and devote more time to her own creative pursuits. As a direct result of Patricia's editorial vision and management, Surface Design Journal now enjoys worldwide acclaim as aresource for current developments in fiber and textile arts. “It's been a great ride and I'll miss it, but it's time to turn the Journal over to another generation. I'm confidant that Marci will do a great job,” states Patricia.

Marci Rae McDade will step up as new editor of Surface Design Journal on January 1, 2012. As former editor of the recently discontinued FiberArts magazine, with an MFA in Fiber and Material Studies from the School of the Art Institute in Chicago, she is a natural and timely choice to both create continuity and introduce change to the Journal. An established voice andthought leader in the field, Marci brings breadth and depth of knowledge as well as passion and publishing acumen. New Book

I was lucky enough to be sent a copy of Muslin a stitched exploration of loose weave fabrics ISBN 978095508354-9by Fibrefusion artist Jan Lovell. Created in a similar to style to On Form their penultimate publication and beautifully illustrated with work by group members. This is an inspiring read that made me go and pick up some loose fibres myself in-between munching mince pies.

Studio Space for Rent

I recently met Michael Vass who has studio space for rent at 319 Tenth Avenue, Downtown Calgary. Here is some information about the space for anyone looking to rent in the area.

"For over ten years the owners of this property have leased these spots to artists, and at this time we have approx. 45 artists doing their art in the property.

Comprising about 15 artists from Untitled Arts Soc. plus perhaps 30 others in individual studios, the range is from hobby artists to full professionals. All studios are nicely set up with warm quiet surroundings, and have access to washrooms, freight elevator with rear loading etc.

Generally ceiling height is ten feet. Wooden floors throughout and shared sink facilities. All spaces are heated, but not air conditioned.

Studios range from small spaces – maybe $300 per month, plus GST, up to larger spaces over 900 square feet at $960 per month. This latter size would be excellent for one or two or possibly three artists. Some spaces have windows – others are fully enclosed. At this time we have one small studio becoming available in February ($300 plus GST) and a large one also at that time being $960 per month – suitable for one/two/three persons. Over the course of a year other possibilities may be available, not always predictable.

Julie Pongrac's work

Is currently exhibiting alongside the work of painter Noel Hodnett. Michelle Sirois-Silver had the opportunity to visit the gallery last week and was impressed by the cohesive nature of the two mediums and techniques. An intriguinging mixture of texture, colour, and value.
